A pre-Oscar party in Beverly Hills next week could tip North Port business owner Jamie Lovern into the big time.
Jamie's company, Lolablue, began as an organic soy candle business and
has expanded to include 100 percent natural body products like sugar
scrubs, handcrafted soaps and lip balm.
After Lela Christine, the editor-in-chief of Power Player Magazine --
which bills itself as a "lifestyle, international, entertainment,
visionary e-zine" -- found Jamie's MySpace page in November and liked
her business philosophy, she asked her to send out some of the products
for the online magazine to test.
They wound up being featured as the magazine's "power beauty pick" for December.
Then, last week, the magazine's editor asked her to send samples of her
products to include in gift bags - known as "swag" in the industry --
for a pre-Oscar party the e-zine is throwing at Chakra Cuisine in the
Hills.
Jamie packed up 71 samples of her Skyclad sugar scrub exfoliator -- in
lavender, lavender vanilla and lemongrass mint -- and full-size Pucker
Up peppermint lip balm, and shipped them off to California. There's
expected to be 65 "VIPs" at the party for 300.
Jamie was invited to the bash as well, but decided to stay home to save money.
The four-year North Port resident says she's "kind of in shock" about her good fortune.
But she's not putting too much stock in it yet.
"I can't get excited until I get a call that a company wants to pick up
(my products)," she said. "I'm just taking it one day at a time."
For Jamie, 38, owning a gradually-getting-more-successful business is a
dream come true. Born and raised in Sarasota and a Ringling School of
Art and Design alum, she spent years as a graphic designer in
publishing, or, as she puts it, "in the icky world of corporate
America."
"I spent nine years there cranking it out," she said. "I had health
problems. The day in, day out was killing me. I didn't want to be in
front of a computer anymore."
Jamie started Lolablue -- which carries the motto, "Indulge yourself.
Respect Mother Earth" -- in 2003. She started slow, working on her
products part time, until she was finally able to make the leap to full
time last year.
Not bad for a woman who started out making candles as gifts for friends.
"I read a lot of books," she said. "I had faith that if I worked hard enough, I'd be successful."
Jamie wanted change in her life, but she also wanted to spend more time
with her son, Dakota, 3, and husband, D.J. Owning her own business
allowed her to do so.
Jamie's products are available at the Saturday Farmers Market in the
North Port Commons from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and at the Punta Gorda's Farmers
Market from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. the same day. They can also be found at Kyle
Kurtis Salon & Spa, 3505 Bobcat Village Center Road, North Port;
North Port Floral, 13600 S. Tamiami Trail; and The Yoga Sanctuary, 403
Sullivan St., Punta Gorda.
You can also check out her Web site, lolablueliving.com.
If next week's party makes her company take off, Jamie's got a plan.
"I've had lots of friends over the years say, 'I'll help you if you need me,'" she said.
